The year 2020 has been a trying time for everyone. In this unprecedented year, a significant amount of people found themselves merging their work and home lives. The call to action for many companies allowing their employees to work from home has opened a much-needed discussion around how best to juggle both environments. This is where calendars come in.

Most people are likely to have a work calendar on their office computer. Such a thing can seem stressful to get your head around. It might be an app you’ve never used, or it might be hard to navigate and see precisely what is happening, when and with whom.

What are the Best Calendar Apps?

With calendars being such a crucial cog in the ever-expanding business machine, and with more and more calendars being published it can get a bit confusing as to which one is best for you or your business.
To make it less of a headache, we’ve listed what we consider to be the best calendar apps, and why.

Google Calendar

Google’s calendar has become a staple of where calendar apps should be positioning themselves. With a responsive design, and features to prevent mistakes, it has become an easy go-to for both personal and business users. Our favorite features:

  • Add-ons available
  • Customizable event colors
  • Integrated with Gmail
  • Can load national and international holidays
  • Schedule meetings with groups

The integration with a Gmail account has made it easier than ever to, with a click of a button, respond to meeting requests. With this feature, it was then made possible to elect a time and date for multiple people to participate in a meeting; a feat which has been very challenging this year.

To ease the burden of not being in the office, many apps have been created in order to be incorporated with Gmail and, by proxy, Google Calendar. Some of the noteworthy add-ons include Zoom, DocuSign and Dropbox. Each add-on helps enable a smoother transition between working from home or the office.

An often-overlooked headache, regarding calendars, is clutter. When a calendar has too many events occurring, within a small time period, it can be hard to distinguish which event is related to another. By allowing users to customize the color scheme of events it’ll enable a more enjoyable experience for all involved.

With these features combined, it’s easy to see why it’s considered to be one of the best calendar apps.

iCloud Calendar

Apple has never been one to shy away from innovation. They reshaped the MP3 player to the modern phone landscape. As always, they have been playing around with minimalism, offering a clean and unified look across all their apps. An often-overlooked remodeling came through the iCloud Calendar. So, what do we like about this one?

  • Notifications informing you when to leave for a meeting and directions to it
  • Shareable read-only calendars
  • Drag and Drop support
  • Siri integration
  • Kept up to date across all Apple devices

Continuing the trend of being user-friendly, Apple has allowed their calendar to operate in tandem with other apps. This alone has made it one of the best calendar apps. On top of this, users can ask Siri to conduct their business or they can take a manual approach and benefit from ease-of-use features such as Drag and Drop, expediting the process.

Apple have tried to streamline their user’s lives since day one. One such way was to add the option to have the calendar notify users when to leave and provide them with directions to their meeting. Alongside this, when creating a meeting, users can add map locations for scheduled events so others don’t miss out on important activities. Such simple notions that have improved their users’ lives dramatically.

Microsoft Exchange Calendar

Our final calendar on the list comes from Microsoft, the frontrunners of software. Microsoft may have made their name with Windows, but it wasn’t long until people fully realized the potential for their other software products. With the launch of Office 365 also came a revamped Microsoft Exchange Calendar. Some of its best features are:

  • Interesting calendars add local sport events
  • Reservations automatically added
  • Groupable calendars
  • Customizable
  • Incorporated time zones

While sharing the foundations of other calendars, Microsoft thought outside the box. Users can customize their experience, allowing different color schemes and themes to be overlaid to give a more personal touch.

Naturally, some users will be involved with multiple calendars at any given time. Thankfully, Microsoft were aware of this dilemma and provided a solution, multi-calendar view. This allowed people to keep their personal calendar clean and tidy. For others, who may have a significant number of calendars, they have the option to merge their calendars, helping to improve their work/ life balance.

Additional highlights help users stay on top of their social activities. Reservations and other events can automatically be added to their calendars. Expanding on this, users can browse local sport events with the Interesting Calendars option, meaning they’ll never be missing out.

The cherry on top comes with the time zone management. When emailing users in another time zone Microsoft will alert you before hitting send, preventing you from waking up any colleagues.
